LEED Consultant for Irene C. Hernandez Middle School
Chicago Public Schools
The Irene C. Hernandez Middle School achieved Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating SystemTM (LEEDTM) in 2010. LEEDTM helped the designers focus on the green elements the City of Chicago wanted to achieve, including sustainable site design, water efficiency, energy efficiency, sustainable materials and indoor environmental quality.
Requirements of the project included, among others, enhanced energy efficiency. The Irene C. Hernandez Middle School exceeds ASHRAE 90.1-2004 efficiency standards by 35%. Some of the additional upgrades include more efficient lighting systems and controls, daylighting controls, low volatile organic compound (VOC) and recycled building materials, products manufactured within 500 miles of Chicago, and a construction process that included an indoor air quality plan.
Henneman Engineering was responsible for the Gold level LEED consulting services.
