New LEED Gold Public Library
City of Fitchburg
This LEED Gold Certified Building is the City of Fitchburg’s first public library, and is located on the corner of Lacy Road and Research Park Drive. This 38,000-square-foot facility features meeting rooms for library and community events, children’s rooms, a technology center, and houses more than 100,000 items. The voice/data cabling infrastructure is a Category 6 for the staff workstations and patron accessible workstation/laptop locations. A fiber optic backbone cable for high bandwidth applications was included in the design and links the new library to the existing City Hall network for seamless voice/data information transfer. This also provides connections to the link the FACTv broadcast transmissions at the new library to the existing FACTv studio in the City Hall Building. The link provides a real-time/live connection to the security systems for the library where the Fitchburg Police Department remotely monitors cameras, sensors and access control devices from the dispatch office. The technology design also included accommodations for WiFi connectivity for the library staff and its patrons. The library’s meeting room, conference room, technology center and children’s story time/craft room all contain complete audio visual systems, designed to improve and enhance the patron's total library experience.
A geothermal based heating and cooling system provides this green building’s energy efficient elements. Site improvements and underground parking are a solid base for other key elements in the design. Energy efficient LED lighting fixtures were used in the parking garage to provide a lighting power density which was well below what the code allows. The addition of the occupancy sensor controls further reduced energy requirements of the space. Throughout the library spaces, energy efficient fluorescent direct and indirect light fixtures coupled with daylight sensors which provided energy savings and comfortable, useable light levels. Point of use hot water heaters and low flow plumbing fixtures reduce energy and water use considerably. Henneman Engineering provided the complete design services for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection and information technology.
