POSITION OVERVIEW
We are seeking an experienced Construction Observer to oversee the construction of a steam distribution system at a higher education campus in central Illinois. This position is ideal for a skilled mechanical trades professional who understands utility infrastructure and has experience observing construction activities to ensure work is completed in accordance with project plans, specifications, and quality standards.
This is a field-based position requiring regular presence at the project site throughout construction.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Observe daily construction activities to verify compliance with project plans and specifications.
- Observe concrete placement and restoration work.
- Inspect tunnel repair activities.
- Monitor installation of new steam and condensate piping.
- Observe installation of piping insulation.
- Document construction progress through daily reports and photographs.
- Identify and communicate construction issues to the project team.
- Coordinate with contractors, owners, and design professionals.
- Assist with punch list development and project closeout activities.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (4-year program).
- 5-10+ years of experience working as a mechanical engineer in a MEP design and consulting firm.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work directly with clients and internal engineering teams.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to client sites as needed, primarily local and regional travel.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical trades, utility construction, or construction observation.
- Experience with steam and condensate piping systems preferred.
- Knowledge of excavation, concrete, underground utilities, and mechanical construction.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
- Strong attention to detail and communication skills.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
- Salary range: $80,000 to $110,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
- Relocation assistance may be available for qualified candidates.
- Benefits package includes paid holidays, vacation, health insurance, disability insurance, life insurance, and 401(k) program.

- $25–$40 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
