Steel, Concrete, Masonry, & Wood Structures

ITG provides comprehensive structural engineering services that support the design, analysis, and performance of industrial facilities. ITG’s expertise spans steel, concrete, masonry, and wood structures—delivering safe, efficient, and durable solutions tailored to the unique demands of industrial environments.

ITG’s structural engineers work closely with clients to develop systems that meet stringent load, vibration, and environmental requirements while maintaining flexibility for future expansion. From new construction to retrofits and rehabilitations, ITG ensures that every structure is optimized for reliability, constructability, and long-term value.

Core Capabilities

  • Structural Design and Analysis: ITG designs robust structural systems for industrial buildings, process facilities, and equipment platforms, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and performance standards.
  • Retrofit and Rehabilitation: ITG evaluates existing structures and develops strengthening or modification strategies to accommodate new equipment, increased loads, or updated safety requirements.
  • Seismic and Wind Design: ITG applies advanced modeling and analysis to ensure structures perform safely under seismic, wind, and other dynamic forces.
  • Foundation and Support Systems: ITG designs deep and shallow foundations, equipment supports, and vibration isolation systems to meet the demands of heavy industrial machinery and sensitive operations.
  • Material Optimization: ITG selects and integrates structural materials—steel, concrete, masonry, and wood—to balance performance, sustainability, and lifecycle cost.
  • Interdisciplinary Coordination: ITG collaborates with mechanical, electrical, and process engineers to ensure structural systems align seamlessly with operational and safety requirements.

Structural Materials

Steel Structures

Steel is one of the most widely used materials in industrial construction due to its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, flexibility, and durability. It can withstand heavy loads and dynamic forces, making it ideal for industrial buildings, warehouses, manufacturing plants, and high-rise structures. Steel’s ability to span large distances without intermediate supports allows for open floor plans that accommodate equipment, storage, and workflow efficiency.

Modern fabrication techniques enable prefabrication and modular construction, which significantly reduce on-site labor and construction time. Steel structures are also adaptable—components can be modified or expanded as facility needs evolve. With proper coatings and maintenance, steel offers long service life and resistance to corrosion, making it a cost-effective choice for many industrial applications.

Concrete Structures

Concrete is valued for its compressive strength, fire resistance, and versatility. It is commonly used in foundations, floors, columns, retaining walls, and heavy-duty industrial facilities where strength and stability are critical. Concrete can be precast in controlled environments for quality assurance or cast-in-place for complex geometries and site-specific conditions.

When combined with steel reinforcement, reinforced concrete provides both tensile and compressive strength, making it suitable for high-load and vibration-prone environments. Concrete’s thermal mass helps regulate indoor temperatures, contributing to energy efficiency. Its durability and low maintenance requirements make it a long-term investment for industrial infrastructure.

Masonry Structures

Masonry construction uses individual units—such as bricks, concrete blocks, or stones—bonded with mortar to form solid, load-bearing walls and partitions. It offers excellent thermal mass, fire resistance, and sound insulation, making it suitable for industrial enclosures, mechanical rooms, and utility buildings.

Masonry is known for its durability and low maintenance, often lasting decades with minimal upkeep. However, it is generally slower to construct than steel or concrete systems and may require more labor. Despite this, masonry’s aesthetic appeal, resistance to weathering, and ability to provide both structural and architectural function make it a valuable option in certain industrial settings.

Wood Structures

Wood remains a practical choice for light industrial buildings, warehouses, and temporary or modular structures. It is renewable, lightweight, and easy to fabricate, offering a sustainable alternative to more energy-intensive materials. Advances in engineered wood products—such as glued-laminated timber (glulam) and cross-laminated timber (CLT)—have expanded wood’s capabilities, allowing for greater spans, improved strength, and enhanced dimensional stability.

While wood is naturally susceptible to fire, moisture, and pests, modern treatments, coatings, and design strategies can mitigate these risks. Its warm aesthetic and environmental benefits make it increasingly popular in projects emphasizing sustainability and carbon reduction..

Conclusion

Each structural material offers unique benefits that can be leveraged to meet the specific needs of industrial projects. By combining material expertise with advanced engineering capabilities, ITG ensures that every structure is designed for strength, efficiency, and adaptability—supporting the long-term success of industrial operations.
