Dept. of Military Affairs, Northwest Armory
Chicago, Illinois
The Northwest Armory is a 225,000 square foot, three story masonry building constructed in 1940. The scope of work provides for upgrading the electrical distribution system including an emergency generator and an automatic transfer switch and replacing light fixtures, ceilings and the fire alarm/security system. This project includes funding for the abatement of asbestos containing materials and replacement of select plumbing systems.
The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency will be consulted during every phase of the project.
Henneman Engineering was responsible for electrical, plumbing, and asbestos abatement engineering design services.
In 2020, Henneman Engineering provided plumbing engineering services for renovations to 15 restrooms across four floors on the west end of the Department of Military Affairs Northwest Armory in Chicago. Engineering services included design of new piping and selection of new fixtures to serve the renovated restrooms. The project re-used existing restroom space with new fixtures in existing locations, while updating large restroom groups to provide ADA accessible water closets and urinals.
Plumbing engineering services for this project included ensuring the existing utilities and pipe sizing was adequate to support the updated fixtures. The tie-in points to existing domestic cold and hot water supply piping needed to be investigated for pipe wear, damage, sizing, and potential presence of asbestos containing materials to ensure the tie-in proceeded smoothly.
