Aspirus Langlade, CICU, MSICU, & Pastoral Renovations

The Aspirus Wausau Hospital CICU, MSICU, and Pastoral Renovations project was a complex renovation in the core of the existing hospital operating suites. This 40,000 SF, multiple-building expansion includes a 12-bed cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) and a 16-bed medical surgical intensive care unit (MSICU) for people recovering from life-threatening injuries and procedures. Each patient room has an attached serenity room accessible by a sliding glass door separating it from the patient room. The serenity room is available for visitors, offering seating and natural lighting from skylights. The project also doubled the capacity for the emergency department’s ambulance garage.

Henneman Engineering provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering design services.

Patient Care Improvements

• Overhead mounted, rotating booms allow flexibility with equipment movement
• Electronic lifts in each room can support at least 1,000 pounds to transfer patients safely
• Walking track with harness to prevent falls
• USB ports to support technology advancements
• Energy efficient LED lighting system adjustable to patient needs

Air Distribution Systems

• Allow nursing staff to direct heat and/or cooled air directly onto the patient
• Ventilation air rates exceed ASHRAE standards
• Smoke evacuation system employed to facilitate the use of skylights instead of windows to provide code-required daylight into ICU rooms
• 5 new air handling units convert systems to variable volume and provide economizer controls
• High efficiency motors in exhaust fans
