University of Illinois, Medical Science Building
Urbana-Champaign, Illinois
The project addressed significant changes in the medical curriculum that have been gradually implemented since the building was originally designed in the early 1970’s. These changes introduced more computer technology into the laboratories and allowed for instruction using that technology.
The project reconfigured the instructional laboratory areas allowing for consolidation of laboratory sessions and providing spaces that facilitate and meet accreditation requirements. The project also added smaller gathering spaces which provide for small group teaching environments. The reconfiguration is providing flexibility and multipurpose use in all laboratories, lecture and seminar space, as well as providing for state of the art technological upgrades. The area involved in the renovation included existing core spaces of the third floors with some utility revisions affecting second floor spaces.
This project also included new wall, ceiling and floor finishes; new lighting, enhanced power, networking and audio visual capabilities; computer projection capabilities; and built-in storage. The audio visual system allows multi-function collaboration spaces to be used as three separate instructional spaces or opened up to be used as one large space. Also included is a unique medical simulation exam room recording system to record simulated doctor- patient interactions.
Mechanical systems upgrades included new energy conservation equipment and features while providing for the 100% exhaust air requirements as required by laboratory occupancies code.
Henneman Engineering was responsible for complete mechanical, plumbing, structural and information technology including IT and AV design services.
